Marginal Gains from hand hygiene?

A top premiership football club has recently installed Hygienic Door Handles into its training ground facility as part of a suite of measures to improve marginal gains.

A mild bug can knock players off their stride and hamper their chances of performing at their best. Teams such as Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City have all suffered in recent years. In today’s competitive sports arena, illness can cost a huge amount which is why top medical consultants and teams are looking at every possible way to generate marginal gains.

This is one of the reasons that Dr Ian McCurdie, the British Olympic Association (BOA) chief medical officer instructed athletes not to shake hands at the 2012 London Olympics. He went on to say:

"At an Olympic Games or any major event the performance impact of becoming ill or even feeling a little  bit ill can be significant. Essentially we are talking about minimising risk of illness and optimising resistance. Minimising exposure and getting bugs into the system and being more robust to manage those should that happen. 'Hand hygiene is it. It is all about hand hygiene'."

Team Sky is also well known for focussing on marginal gains. Led by Dave Brailsford, Team Sky has built its success on the aggregation of marginal gains. Essentially, the idea is that if you can improve lots of things by a small amount, the net result can make the difference between winning and losing.

Team Sky examines all aspects of training, physiology, recovery, nutrition, equipment, psychology, racing strategy, and everything else that has an influence on results, and tries to improve every little thing. Each improvement might be very small, but it’s all about the cumulative effect.

It’s not a new philosophy, but Team Sky has turned it into an art form and as we all know, it has had three overall wins in the last four Tours de France. The proof is in the pudding and all that.
