The Mater Private, Ireland’s leading private hospital, will begin a three-month trial of the Pure Hold Hygiene Handle in April 2012.
The Dublin hospital, which is the first in Ireland to announce its intention to evaluate the Hygiene Handle, is doing so as part of its rigorous policies on infection prevention and patient safety.
The innovative Hygiene Handle has been designed to address the problem of hand hygiene in hospitals and other buildings. By incorporating the gel dispenser into the door handle it ensures that everyone who enters the area uses the sanitising hand gel. In hospital trials compliance rates were increased on average by more than 100%.
Nine ‘gel-only’ handles will be installed at Mater Private at locations throughout hospital including high-risk areas - Intensive Care Unit and Oncology ward entrances - and high footfall areas – the Health Check Centre toilet doors and in a busy stairwell.
If the three-month evaluation proves successful, additional handles are likely to be installed at other strategic locations around the hospital to reinforce the importance of good hand hygiene and increase compliance.
