Mount Carmel Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, a private hospital, which specialises in acute medical, surgical and maternity care, has announced its intention to take part in trials of the new Hygiene Handle from Pure Hold.
Four Hygiene Handles will be installed at the entrances to the Theatre and the Special Care Baby Unit. The trials will begin in May and are planned to last three months, during which time the hospital will measure improvements in standards of hand hygiene for visitors and staff entering the these two critical areas.
Mount Carmel specialises in acute medical care and holds the prestigious Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation standard. This internationally recognised standard is focussed on improving the safety of patient care through accreditation, certification and helping organizations implement practical and sustainable solutions, such as the Hygiene Handle.
By incorporating the gel dispenser into the door handle, the innovative Hygiene Handle ensures that everyone who enters the area uses sanitising hand gel. In hospital trials hand hygiene compliance rates were increased on average by more than 100%, with some showing improvements of over 700%.
If the trials at Mount Carmel are successful, infection prevention staff are likely to consider installing more Hygiene Handles at strategic locations around the hospital to reinforce the importance of good hand hygiene and increase compliance.
